Fecal Matters: No Swimming or Wading Advisory issued for the Thea Foss Waterway, Pierce County

BEACH Program Update

On June 4, 2015 Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department issued a no swimming or wading advisory for the Thea Foss Waterway, near the dock at Johnnys or the Esplanade.  High levels of bacteria found in the water show an increased risk of gastrointestinal illness. This advisory will remain in place until Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department sampling shows bacteria levels are safe.

Contact with fecal contaminated waters can result in gastroenteritis, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses. Children and the elderly may be more vulnerable to waterborne illnesses.

Stay updated about water quality at your beaches by keeping up with us on Facebook, checking beach status on Coastal Atlas, or joining our listserv. Debby Sargeant the BEACH Program Manager is available at debby.sargeant@ecy.wa.gov for questions.
