Titlow Park Beach CLOSED to Swimming, Pierce County

BEACH Program Update

On May 26, 2016 Titlow Park beach in Pierce County was closed to swimming. Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department recommends people do not swim or wade at Titlow Beach. High levels of bacteria found in the water show an increased risk of gastrointestinal illness. A water sample collected at the beach by the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department had a high count of bacteria and follow-up sampling staff also showed high bacteria counts at Titlow Beach.
Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department will continue to monitor bacteria levels at this location.  When bacteria levels no longer show increased risks to public health the closure will be lifted.

Contact with fecal contaminated waters can result in gastroenteritis, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses. Children and the elderly may be more vulnerable to waterborne illnesses.

Stay updated about water quality at your beaches by keeping up with us on Facebook, checking beach status on Coastal Atlas, or joining our listserv. Debby Sargeant is the BEACH Program Manager and is available at dsar461@ecy.wa.gov for questions.
